Famous for a Night

As I rolled up in the taxi to the St. Bartholomew’s Church in downtown New York my stomach dropped. Was this real life? Were there really paparazzi lining the sides of the stairs? This really was real life. The taxi driver turned the corner and said, “What kind of event is going on here?” Well this was a special event. You had to be invited to get in. And we had our names on the list! We hopped out of the taxi and walked up to the men dressed in tuxedoes who whipped out their iPad's to check if our names were on the list. Sure enough, we were legit, and out names were on the list. Put there by the one and only, Mick Jagger. I know I shouldn’t have felt so much excitement for a memorial service for the life of L’Wren Scott but I couldn’t help but feel giddy inside. There were famous people surrounding me as I walked down the long aisle to find our seats. My mom, Nanette, Cami and I all found a row and sat down. I started looking around and panicking for a second. Majority of the people were wearing black. In my mind I thought, didn’t the invitation say to dress bold and glamorous? I was sure dressed bold and glamorous in a L’Wren Scott Bright red dress. We already stood out because of the “Utah Look” we all had. Bright blonde poofed hair and fairly light features. Everyone else looked hard and edgy. We definitely didn’t fit in. After more and more people arrived in turns out that there were others wearing bright colors too. I was in the clear. I picked up the schedule for the memorial. A Beautiful picture of L’Wren was on the front. She was so gorgeous. It is so sad that she is gone. I guess you never know what someone is going through, even though they may appear like they have it all. I flipped it over and on the back there was a list of what was going to happen that night. Some songs, a prayer, welcoming, then to my surprise Mick Jagger was speaking. Sarah Jessica Parker too? This was unreal. The editor of Vogue magazine, Andre Leon Talley, also spoke while he was wearing his Chanel 10 foot long cape. He was an interesting character. Well I guess everyone was quite interesting that day. Randy Bambrough spoke then Ellen Barkin, Andre, Sarah, Cathy Horyn, Rachel Feinstein, and last was Mick. Look at me. Referring to them by their first names like we are long time friends, I guess after tonight we might be! Ha just kidding. Mick ended his talk with a song he sang for L’Wren. It was awesome. You can tell that they really did enjoy being with each other and they loved each other. That made me really happy. After the service was over it was time to go to the top of The Standard building where Mick had rented out a room for the after party. While waiting in line to leave the church, my mom was standing next to Meg Ryan. She was brave and just talked to her! She was so nice too! I was proud of my mom in that moment. I have an awesome mom J So after that we left the church, surrounded again by the paparazzi, climbed into the charter vans and headed to The Standard. Everyone around me was someone yet I felt like I didn’t know which important person was what. We got to the standard and were escorted upstairs. When we arrived there were 20 models lining the hallway entrance to the party. All over 6 feet, skin and bones, rockin L’Wren’s dresses. We walked through and admired them as they stared at us blankly. It was amazing and awkward all at the same time. I loved it. The 4 of us Utah girls stood around for a bit as all the famous people arrived. We ended up going to the buffet because none of the famous people were eating and we were all hungry. No wonder they are all skin and bones. I ate the best seafood I have ever eaten in my whole life. There was crab, shrimp, lobster, mussels and everything you could think of! I also got a “juice surprise” from the bar (non-alcoholic) and a mojito!! With all the alcohol!! Ha not.. I am kidding it was definitely virgin. We wandered around a little and talked to Mick Jagger's daughter’s boyfriend who was a character. He has a tragus piercing and a side ponytail bun thing and a broken leg with a cast on it. He was very nice to me though and he talked to our little group for about 20 minutes. Which really impressed me. I also had to opportunity to talk to Mick Jagger for a little and meet him again. He was very nice to us as well. Most of the people had nothing to do with us and they were not super friendly. Since we were feeling out of place, we decided to sit at a table in the corner for majority of the night and just observe all the people around us, and of course take a little dessert every once in awhile when they would come around to us. I mean come on, we were the only ones taking desserts anyway and someone had to eat them! My feet were numb so it felt really nice to finally be sitting down. As I was sitting there I was thinking about the night. I was seriously so excited and nervous to come to this memorial and celebration of L’Wrens life. Now that I was actually sitting here I was thinking, “This really isn’t THAT cool.” Don’t get me wrong, it was way cool and a good story, but in the end it is not what would make me happy! I would never want to be escorted everywhere and be famous. I would never want to not be able to eat all the yummy seafood and starve myself to be a model or actress. I wouldn’t like the clubbing lifestyle. That party that night was good for me because I discovered exactly what I wouldn’t want. Sami DOES NOT want to be famous! I am perfectly content with my lifestyle. I love BYU and I love my family. I love where I am from, Utah is gorgeous. I love all my friends that I am surrounded with and I love that they are so warm and welcoming. Not cold and edgy like all these big shots. At least I have a fun story to tell about this epic adventure and about all the famous people I met! I met a whole bunch of famous people. Here is a list of some of the people I met or were present at that party that night:

Julianne Moore
Ellen Barkin
Meg Ryan (So nice and friendly)
Famke Jansen
Sarah Jessica Parker (Super super small but cute!)
Olivia Munn
Jimmy Fallon (Not that friendly, didn’t want anything to do with us)
Karlie Kloss
John McEnroe (Wore a flat bill baseball cap with a tux, like a boss)
Keith Richards
Mick Jagger (Old and skinny but he was nice to us and seemed to treat L’Wren well)
The Jagger Family
Anna Wintour (editor and chief of Vogue magazine)
Renee Zellweger
Tim Rice
Martin Scorsese

And many more… There kept being people that would show up and I knew they were someone famous and I knew I recognized them from somewhere but I just didn’t know who exactly and I didn’t know where I knew them from! I figure that one day I will be watching TV or something and I will figure it out. Well that was my night! Oh ya and I also got hit on by some random guy outside of the bar while I was walking out of The Standard on the way home hahahaha! That was a first. Then we found a sketchy guy who claimed to be a driver, trusted him, (which I look back and don’t know why we trusted him) and he took us back to our hotel. The night was over and now it was time to get a few hours of sleep before I would head off to London! It also was time to say goodbye to my mommy soon. So many mixed feelings. What a night!

This is Mick. Just chill in. Everyone was famous so it was weird to have our phones out so I snagged a picture secretly.

Yes this is the view from each individual bathroom stall. Unbelievable!
